Former Talking Head David Byrne Presents I "Heart" PowerPoint
As part of the Distinguished Speaker Series, CITS and UCSB Arts & Lectures are pleased to welcome to campus David Byrne, the visual artist, film-maker, and former band leader of the Talking Heads. Byrne will present a performance piece on Tuesday, March 8 at 8 pm in Corwin Pavilion dealing with technology, communication, and visual art.
The performance is a by-product of material Byrne first developed in his book and CD Envisioning Emotional Epistemological Information, which is a collection of images, essays, and music exploring and subverting Microsoft’s presentation software PowerPoint. The project has been showcased in galleries from New York to Tokyo. In the live presentation, Byrne projects slides with some distinct and quirky twists.
David Byrne attended Rhode Island School of Design and Maryland Institute College of Art. He is primarily known as co-founder of the Talking Heads, though he has enjoyed a distinguished career in other media as well. In concert and on record, the Talking Heads were acclaimed by critics as well as audiences, and they exerted a lasting influence on popular music. They were known for their visual approach to music, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
Byrne has been involved with photography and design since his college days and has been publishing and exhibiting his work for the past decade. Like his film and musical projects, his visual work is often described as elevating the mundane and banal to the level of art, and creating lasting icons out of everyday materials.
Tickets for the event are $20 for the general public and $15 for UCSB students. For more information call UCSB Arts & Lectures ticket office at (805) 893-3535.
