Facebook and Privacy in the News

Three major privacy stories concerning Facebook have come out over the past week:

First, a Calvin College student has been suspended for one year over a Facebook message he allegedly posted about his ex-girlfriend. The college cited Mr. Harris, a sophomore, for violating technology and conduct codes at the institution, which refers to itself as “distinctively Christian.” [CHE]

And second, Facebook launched new Terms of Service this week and then took them back.

Online privacy

Online privacy is a hot topic.

In March, Miriam Metzger will present at the CITS Faculty Lecture Series about Privacy 2.0.

James Grimmelmann of New York Law School has published an article on law and policy related to privacy and social network sites using Facebook as its principal example. He argues that people's framing of privacy problems, and most of the solutions that people have in mind, are bad fits for social networking services.

Miriam Metzger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at UC Santa Barbara her research includes studies of the credibility of information in the new media environment, problems of online privacy and security, the impact of media on public opinion, and the theoretical and regulatory changes brought about by the development of new media technologies.
