Units on Campus that Provide Workshops on Data Science Topics

Many graduate students in the IT&S Emphasis have a strong expertise in their subject area, which could be utilized in the analysis of complex data now collected and stored across the world wide web. However, finding and collecting this data into a usable format often stymies many researchers’ efforts toward this end. Below, we have gathered information about the different units at UCSB that provide workshops designed to impart the skills necessary for graduate students to begin working with the vast repositories of data stored across the world wide web, as well as different analytic software packages.  If you have information that may be added to this list please contact Melissa Bator, Academic Coordinator, mjb@ucsb.edu.

Center for Scientific Computing
UCSB Center for Scientific Computing at CNSI was formed to promote the effective use of High Performance Computing in the research environment. Beyond simply providing the computing resources themselves, part of their mission is to provide training in the best use of computing resources; whether they are at UCSB, or beyond. The CSC sponsors classes, tutorials, and individual training in general Unix/Linux, compiling, and optimization of codes. The CSC also actively engages IT staff at research units across campus so that researchers can get help from their local IT staff, who often understand best what they need to do their projects.

Collaborate College of Letters and Science
Workshops, taught by student staff, are offered every quarter to provide students at UCSB with essential skills in many software packages available in the Collaborate labs. Workshop topics include: Javascript, InDesign, Python, R, and more. Workshops held 7-9pm, SSMS 1301.

Data Science @ UCSB
Data Science @ UCSB is a student run club centered around developing career paths in the field of data science. Their organization teaches members how to use programs like R, Python, and SQL, which students then utilize in their own group-led projects. Apart from these hands-on activities, Data Science @ UCSB also hosts key speakers from data-centered companies in the industry. Data Science @ UCSB is centered around a collaborative community of self-driven students who strive to further their knowledge in the realm of data science.

Contact: datascience.ucsb@gmail.com or drop by one of their meetings to talk to them in person. The club meets every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Digital Arts and Humanities Commons  (Music 1400)

Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory
Located in the UCSB Library, the Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory is UCSB's home for data-centric research support. The Collaboratory team offers expert guidance on access to the Library's data collections, and supports software tools to analyze and visualize quantitative, qualitative, and spatial data. The collaboratory also offers various trainings throughout the year, which may be relevant for your research.
